In this section you'll find answers to many frequently asked questions about the London Ambassadors programme.
Everyone who attended a recruitment event will be emailed between 28-29 September to let them know if they have or haven't been successful.
Your location and shift offer is based on two things: what you’ve told us about where and when you want to volunteer, together with the needs of the Ambassadors programme to provide an outstanding visitor welcome.
We have done our best to offer all Ambassadors their first or second choice location, and their preferred volunteering dates. However, due to certain areas – such as Stratford, the City and the West End – being oversubscribed, this hasn’t always been possible, so we have offered you a role at a site where Ambassadors will be needed at Games time. This site will attract plenty of Games-time visitors, so will still offer you a fantastic experience and the opportunity to play a key role in welcoming the world to London.
It may be that your first and second choice locations are oversubscribed – ie, there are more Ambassadors wanting to volunteer there than places available. This is likely if you chose Stratford, the City or the West End.
To accept your offer, please visit http://schedule.londonambassadors.org.uk and log in using the email address you used when you registered, and the password in your offer email. Once you’ve clicked ‘Accept’, you’ll be asked to confirm that you’re happy for us to undertake a background security check. Please note that your offer is conditional on the results of your background check.
To decline your offer, please log in at http://schedule.londonambassadors.org.uk and click ‘Decline’. We will then send you details of any alternative locations and dates that may become available next month.
In order to receive details of alternative locations and dates, please make sure you log in and decline your offer by 17 October 2011.
If you decide to decline your offer, you may not be able to accept this offer – or any other offer – later on.
Only in very special circumstances. You won’t be able to change your location or dates online; please call us on 0844 888 9187.
As these locations are outside of London, you’ll be given a zone 1-6 travelcard, plus an overground rail ticket to the airport.
All 16- and 17-year old Ambassadors will be allocated a mentor to accompany them while they volunteer. All mentors will be appropriately trained and will have undergone relevant background checks.
Not all sites require volunteers for the full six days or five hours. Where this is the case, Ambassadors have been offered slightly different hours – for example, five volunteering days or four-hour shifts.
We will be flexible and work your shifts around the events you have tickets to, providing you’re still able to volunteer for four out of six of your volunteering days (or three out of five days, if you’ve been offered a five-day shift). If you have Games tickets that prevent this, please decline your offer and request to receive details of the shifts that may become available next month.
Games-time security is extremely important and we need to ensure that all London Ambassadors have undergone appropriate security checks. Also, some Ambassadors will be working with young people or vulnerable adults, who we have a duty to protect.
Applications for the London Ambassadors roles far exceeded the number of roles available. Consequently, the purpose of the recruitment events was to help us decide which candidates to make offers to. All candidates were assessed for each element of the recruitment event, and a threshold was set to determine the minimum score needed by a candidate to be offered a role.
At the recruitment event, candidates were given a score for their one to one interview and for each of the three group activities. A threshold was set to determine the minimum score needed by a candidate to be offered a role as a London Ambassador. All scores were double-checked to ensure fairness to all candidates. The one to one interview and group sessions were conducted and assessed by different interviewers/facilitators.
Candidates were assessed by one of the facilitators who conducted each of the group activities, and the interviewer who conducted the one to one interview. All scores were checked for consistency, fairness and transparency.
Assessors from the local Volunteer Centres each spent a full day on training processes with recruitment professionals at Procter & Gamble, London Ambassadors’ recruitment partner.
Volunteer Centre staff, who have extensive experience in recruiting and training volunteers, then delivered the training to their staff and volunteers who took part in the delivery of the recruitment events. Project managers were on hand to provide ongoing support for the training and delivery process throughout the duration of recruitment.
Assessors were trained in the ideal characteristics that potential Ambassadors need, and were familiarised with the assessment process for the group and the one-to-one sessions to ensure equity across the ten recruitment centres.
No; offers are based solely on candidates’ performance at their recruitment event.
Due to the large number of candidates we saw at the recruitment events, we are unable to provide individual feedback on interview performance.
In April, we emailed everyone who applied to let you know if you’ve been shortlisted to attend a London Ambassadors recruitment event.
No. If you are short-listed, you must attend a recruitment event in order to be selected to be a London Ambassador.

If you’re invited to a recruitment event, you can expect the event to run as follows:
You’ll start off in a team of 12 where you’ll be given a brief introduction to what being a London Ambassador is all about and have a chance to share your ideas about what you love about London.
You’ll then be involved in a short fun team exercise designed to see how you handle the sort of things that might come your way at Games time!
Finally, you’ll have a 15-minute one-to-one session where we’ll ask you questions about what makes you an ideal London Ambassador, and you’ll get the chance to ask us any questions you have about being a London Ambassador.
By the end of the interview you should have a good idea of what being a London Ambassador is all about and whether it’s right for you.
If you miss the start of your session, we will try to find a place for you in the next session. If you’re unable to wait until the start of the next session, or if we’re unable to fit you in, you will need to call us on 0844 888 9187 and we will try to re-schedule you an alternative session in the future.
If you need to change your session, please call us on 0844 888 9187.

There are also numerous private companies who can source a copy of your long form birth certificate (at a charge).
Each long form birth certificate issued is actually a certified copy of an entry from the register of births, which is held by the local Register office and at the General Register Office, Southport, pursuant to the Births and Deaths Registration Act of 1953. The long form certificate is an exact copy of the entry, showing the child's surname, forename(s), date of birth, sex, place of birth, the parent(s) name(s), their address and occupations at the time of registration. Full certificates are required for most legal purposes.
In addition, one can obtain a 'short form' birth certificate, which is an abstract of the original entry and only includes the surname, forename(s), date of birth, sex, registration district and sub-district in which the birth took place.

All London Ambassadors will receive three full days of training to ensure you are properly skilled, briefed and ready for your Games time role. We’ll also be supporting you throughout the programme to answer any questions you have and to help ensure you are ready to welcome the world to London.

Module two will teach you about the Games, London at Games time and the visitors and will allow you to apply and practise what you have learnt in module one. The dates for this training are between 10 April and 11 May and will again require one full day of your time.
Module three is when you will get to see and understand your specific location and meet your team. This will happen between 14 May and 13 July and will take the last of the three days you have committed for training time.

Our staff can give you details of local places such as cafes, coffee shops, waiting rooms etc where family or friends can wait for you.
However, if you are under 16, we do recommend that you are accompanied by a parent or guardian and we can arrange for your parent/guardian to wait inside the venue if required.
